UN Climate Change Conference 2025: Global Climate Policy at the Heart of the Amazon
The International Climate Initiative at COP30 in Brazil
From 10 to 21 November, the international community gathered for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil – a city located in the Amazon region, one of the planet’s most vital ecosystems.
The agenda included the consistent implementation of the global energy transition, climate financing, better conservation of endangered rainforests, for example through the COP30 Action Agenda, international forest conservation, sustainable management and supply chains, and improved adaptation to unavoidable climate change.
Ten years after the Paris Agreement, the focus was also on reviewing the new nationally determined contributions (NDCs) of the signatory states for the period up to 2035, which formed an important basis for COP 30.
Here you will find the final press release from the Federal Environment Ministry and the Federal Development Ministry:
The International Climate Initiative on site
Germany’s International Climate Initiative (IKI) has also been represented on site. Through numerous contributions and events, it helped strengthen international cooperation in climate action.
The annual conference also serves as an important driving force for the further development of the International Climate Initiative.
Ambitious further development and implementation of NDCs
One focus of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) is on providing support for the policymaking frameworks in its partner countries to promote the socio-ecological transformation towards climate-neutral societies.
A central aspect of this is providing support for the partner countries in the ambitious further development and implementation of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and Long-Term Strategies (LTS).
New funding opportunities
At the IKI High Level Event during this year’s UN Climate Conference in Belém, German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider officially launched the first call for project ideas under the IKI Large Grants and opened the next rounds of the IKI Medium Grants and IKI Small Grants.

The IKI in Brazil
Working together creates trust – between North and South, governments and international organisations, public and private sectors. Germany remains a reliable partner for global cooperation on climate change. It is in our own interest that other countries meet their climate targets. A key pillar of this work is our International Climate Initiative.
Three IKI Calls open
International Climate Finance
Climate change poses immense challenges for all countries—challenges that can only be addressed through collective global action. Under the Paris Agreement, the international community agreed that industrialised nations would provide financial support to developing and emerging countries for climate action and adaptation to the impacts of climate change. Until 2025, the shared goal is to mobilise 100 billion US dollars per year for this purpose.
Germany met its commitments again in 2024: international climate finance amounted to 11.8 billion euros, including 6.1 billion euros from public budget funds. This means that Germany once again achieved the international target of providing at least six billion euros annually from public resources. For the first time, more than one billion euros in private investment were also mobilised for climate action projects.
At COP30 in Brazil, the Federal Government will advocate advancing global climate protection through ambitious decisions.
