Advancing Understanding of Natural Forest Carbon Stock Enhancement as part of REDD+

Objective and activities

The project enhances the capacities of its partners in the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Vietnam. The project's goal is to pilot the expansion of carbon enrichment measures in forests, to collect and disseminate relevant information and to integrate the topic into national REDD+ planning. A pilot area of 5,000 hectares comprising various forest ecosystems will be under restoration and local employees are trained. Monitoring systems in pilot areas are tested to gain valuable experience in integrating natural carbon storage into national REDD+ systems. Further, the project partners develop and test a system to determine whether measures to restore damaged forests are economically feasible. Transaction and administrative costs play a major role in this, as does the introduction of payment systems that benefit the local population in the long term. In addition, workshops and training measures are carried out to promote knowledge exchange and capacity development.

State of implementation/results

  • Project in implementation
  • Carried out 2 Training of Trainers (ToT) training courses on forest rehabilitation and Management of natural regeneration toward Permanent Forest Estates. 53 technical staffs trained (14 are female).
  • Carried out 36 training courses on forest rehabilitation and Management of natural regeneration to farmer - 1360 farmers trained (632 are female)
  • Carried out 57 training courses on System of Rice Intensification (SRI) techniques to farmer living next to forest - 1710 farmers trained (342 are female)
  • Capacity building on development of Forest Landscape Restoration Plan for Vu Quang National Park, Ha Tinh Province and Pu Hoat Nature Reserve, Nghe An Province- 39 technical staffs trained.
  • 2 forest landscape restoration plans with suitable interventions was consulted and developed - Vu Quang National Park, Ha Tinh Province and Pu Hoat Nature Reserve, Nghe An Province.
  • The last training on forest carbon stock monitoring has been implemented - 9 technical staff of Ke Go Nature Reserve trained. The preliminary results show >7% increase in annual growth rates of poor and medium quality evergreen forests as a result of these activities (equivalent to 2.2 tCO2ha-1yr-1).
  • 330 households participated in restoration of degraded forestland through scattered planting of 140,000 seedlings of native timber species (equivalent 450 ha planted).
  • A regional knowledge sharing workshop on innovative techniques and business cases for restoring natural forest ecosystem will be held in Ha Noi in mid-October 2017.
