Adapted management of ecosystems to prevent coastal erosion in a changing climate

As of: December 2020

The objective of this project is to make communities less vulnerable to climate change-related sea level rise and extreme events through ecosystem-based coastal protection measures. This is to be achieved by identifying ecosystems with a high protection potential (especially mangroves, coral reefs and seagrass beds), developing management plans for these ecosystems, implementing measures for their protection, using or rehabilitating them taking adaptation into account, as well as by raising awareness of their ecological and economic significance. Implementation to be carried out through the environment ministry with the subordinate agencies Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras (coastal research institute (INVEMAR), Instituto de Hidrología, Meteorología y Estudios Ambientales (institute for hydrology, meteorology and environmental studies (IDEAM) and various NGOs, including WWF and Patrimonio Natural.
