Promotion of the ‘Conservando Juntos’ tropical forest protection programme in Peru

Objective and activities

The ‘Conservando Juntos’ (‘Conserving Together’) programme, which was established as a consequence of Peru’s new environmental policy in 2009, provided for an innovative instrument whereby transfer payments from the national budget and other sources were made to those indigenous communities that undertook to conserve their tropical forests (total of around 10.5 million hectares). To achieve this goal, the project developped locally adapted technical and socio-economic criteria and methods as well as a monitoring system for the compensation payments. The participating communities were advised and trained for implementation of this instrument. The project had pilot character for countries of the Amazon such as Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia and strengthened the political and economic position of the indigenous population.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • Pilot regions in Selva Central, Condorcanqui / Amazonas, San Martín
  • Compensation payments implemented for an area of 989.301 ha and 82 Indigenous communities including 38.000 individuals
  • Evaluation of the concept of financial compensation for three pilot regions conducted, results have been integrated into strategic documents of PNCB
  • Deforestation was highly reduced after the disbursement of financial compensation in the pilot regions
  • Methodology for pilot region and community selection developed
  • Guidelines, methods, instruments and trainings for Indigenous communities developed, revised and integrated into PNCB
  • Study on the distribution of cadasters for ecological and economic of important seed trees gives recommendations for the valorization of degraded land
  • Baseline, moduls and database (GeoBosque) for the ecological monitoring of deforestation dynamics as well as an early warning system developed and implemented in the pilot regions
  • Capacity building through numerous workshops, trainings, project visits and exchange meetings organized
