Avoiding Emissions through Effective Management of Protected Areas in Peruvian Amazonia

An existing project designed to conserve forest ecosystems in Amazonia was expanded both spatially and thematically. It took place in three adjoining protected areas, with an additional area of 686,000 ha between them as well as buffer zones amounting to approximately one Mio. ha. The project assisted the population and the authority responsible for protected areas (SERNANP) to administer the sites and engage in participatory management. Project activities included building management capacity and investing in measures for sustainable resource use and alternative incomes in the buffer zones. This reduced deforestation and CO2 emissions. The avoided emissions were quantified by means of a monitoring system for REDD+ in line with the standards set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Furthermore, the Peruvian government was assisted in feeding the experience it gathers in this pilot region into current policy discourse on REDD+.

- Environmental communication and management plans in protection areas developed, approved and implemented by the protection area authority
- 29 approved, small local projects relevant to climate change or the maintenance of carbon sinks implemented in the buffer zones of the protection areas, rising the income of 470 families
- Four REDD workshops and environmental services delivered to staff of the protection areas; one course held for local actors in the project area and another for local people on the restoration of degraded ecosystems
