Biodiversity and climate protection in the Mata Atlântica

Objective and activities

The project contributs to biodiversity conservation, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change adaptation in the Mata Atlântica. Protected areas across various regions, some of which are fragmented, are protected and linked together. The areas are located in the back country of Rio de Janeiro, in the southern part of the state of Bahia, and in the coastal region between the states of São Paulo and Paraná. The project works with local communities to register small-scale landholders in a rural environmental land registry. The project provides advisory support to state environmental authorities on establishing reference centres to support the restoration of degraded areas. Development scenarios that include climate change, its impacts and vulnerability analyses help to identify ways in which the sustainable use of ecosystems can contribute to greenhouse gas reductions and climate change adaptation.

State of implementation/results

  • Among the three project regions, climate risks were identified through participative processes. Opportunities were designed through ecosystem-based adaptation strategies on more than 2.5 million hectares. Concretely, reduction and adaptation measures were implemented on an area of 50.000 hectares. A strategy to promote capacities in the field of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) was developed and is currently implemented, with a strong focus on the following aspects:
  • The development of Training of Trainer processes (ToT) with already more than 220 participants, including the training of 46 specialists selected to foster a multiplying effect
  • Institutionalizing the EbA approach in several educational and advanced training institutions in Brazil
  • The dissemination and use of the MARISCO-Method (adaptative MAnagement of vulnerability and RIsk at COnservation sites)
  • Conduction of an online courses on community conservation plans of Mata Atlântica (PMMA), which already reached more than 600 participants
  • Communication and knowledge networks
  • 15 pilot projects are currently being implemented so as to adapt Ecosystem-based Adaptation in planning processes on a local scale, namely in:
  • The community planning of Porto Seguro (community master plan, community plan for the conservation and restoration of Mata Atlântica)
  • The management plan of the Canaéia-Iguape-Peruibe protected area
  • The land use and urban planning in the community of Duque de Caxias
  • Experiences and implementation results on EbA were integrated into different policies on a national scale, for instance the National Adaptation Plan to Climate Change (PNA), the National Plan for Natural Vegetation Restoration (Planaveg), indicators to monitor the Brazilian National Biodiversity Goals or the new forestry claw (Código Florestal). Furthermore, the findings were by high government representatives at the occasion of various national and international events, such as the presentation of the Brazilian iNDCs at the UNFCCC COP in Paris 2015.
  • The annual Mata Atlântica report, among others, was published.
  • Financial cooperation was initiated in 2016.
