Biosphere reserve and protected area management

As of: August 2020

Objective and activities

The Amazon region of Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth. However, the biodiversity of the region is threatened by unsustainable uses of land and resources combined with inadequate management of the existing protected areas. The project is part of the "Development Cooperation Programme for the Protection of Biodiversity and the Adaptation and Prevention of Climate Change" and strengthens the protected areas of Yasuní, Limoncocha, and Cuyabeno as well as their areas of influence. To this end, the project promotes improved management and sustainable financing and helps to introduce sustainable forms of using natural resources. The project activities include the development and implementation of protection strategies, funding of infrastructure and equipment for park staff, and the promotion of local initiatives to create environmentally sound sources of income. These activities help to reduce the threats to the protected areas and improve the livelihood of local people. /
