Climate change adaptation through climate-sensitive flood water management in the Lower Mekong Basin

The project strengthened the capacities of relevant professional bodies in the four riparian states Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Viet Nam as well as the Secretariat of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) to predict the impacts of climate change. The aim was for the countries to be better equipped to prevent or mitigate the growing risk of flooding and the damage arising from it. The project took existing flood forecasting systems and incorporated the impacts of specific climatic factors. Local stakeholders learned how to apply these systems for the planning and implementation of adaptation measures. This was realized through capacity building, on-the-job training, and through direct advisory support as well as through communication with other river basin organisations, particularly from Europe. The project carried out practical tests on the forecast procedures that have been developed and helped the partners to implement pilot flood prevention measures.
