ecbi Training and Support Project

As of: February 2020

Objective and activities

The European capacity building initiative (ecbi) is a consortium that has a proven ten-year track record in supporting the international climate change negotiations through three work streams: a Fellowship Programme, a Training and Support Programme, and a Publications and Policy Analysis Unit. Building on this track record, the ecbi lead members International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and Oxford Climate Policy (OCP) propose an integrated Training and Support Project to help build a level playing field for developing country climate change negotiators particularly from the most vulnerable countries.

State of implementation/results

  • Three annual regional training workshops for junior climate change negotiators from developing countries are held for Anglophone Africa, Francophone Africa and Asia and the Pacific. In 2019, the workshops were conducted in Ethiopia and Nepal with 92 negotiators participating. The workshops included mock negotiations sessions and presentations from regional experts on key areas of the climate change negotiations.
  • Annual pre-COP workshops are completed prior to the largest UN climate change negotiations. In 2019, the pre-COP25 workshop will be held on 30 November in Santiago, Chile.
  • Logisitcal support for individual negotiators was provided to two bursary holders to attend UN climate change negotiations. During 2019, the project has supported Ms Danise Love Dennis from Liberia and Ms Fatima Athoumani from Comoros.
