Energy Efficient Urban District

As of: September 2021

Ukrainian residential buildings still have a lot of potential where energy efficiency is concerned – and this applies to both old and new buildings, with the result that the construction sector today accounts for around 40% of energy consumption in the country. The project showed how energy can be saved and climate-damaging emissions reduced using a model construction complex in Kiev. Equipped with modern technologies like high-insulation windows, heat pumps and a ventilation system, the renovated part of the complex serves as a showcase for the planning, construction and operation of an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly building. The project shared its experience with the Ukrainian construction sector and universities with the aim of integrating energy efficiency more intensively into the training of construction specialists. In addition, the project worked to improve the framework conditions for energy-efficient construction in Ukraine.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed.
  • Various exemplary measures implemented to improve energy efficiency in a construction project (windows, shading, solar thermal heating system/heat pumps, decentralised, controlled ventilation of individual rooms, monitoring of energy consumption, baseline study)
  • Workshops, training courses and seminars attended by around 400 participants
  • Green building and energy efficiency introduced as modules on the construction course at the Kyiv College of Building, Architecture and Design; 12 RETScreen trainers began a course at the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture
  • Travelling exhibition shown in 15 cities
  • Website designed and launched
  • Financing strategies formulated (including cooperation agreements with energy service companies)
  • The Green Building Council Ukraine was established in 2011. It actively promotes sustainable construction among investors and building developers and has introduced building certificates to the market.
