Generating Energy from Waste Water and Organic Waste (Waste to Energy)

Objective and activities
The project reduced greenhouse gas emissions in the Indian city of Nashik by using sewage and organic waste to produce energy. One of the intentions of the project was to demonstrate a technical solution that is reproducible and financially feasible in densely populated urban areas and meets the Indian government’s climate change targets. The demonstration project brought together a range of actors in Nashik who designed, built and operated a plant in which sewage and organic waste undergo anaerobic fermentation, enabling materials to be recovered and energy generated.
State of implementation/results
- Feasibility study conducted to assess potential locations for the plant's construction; city of Nashik in India's Maharashtra state chosen as the most suitable location
- Public-private partnership concept developed for the plant's construction, according to which Nashik takes responsibility for the construction
- Shell construction of the digestion plant, which includes operations and social buildings, receiving tanks for fermenting substrates and substructure of the fermenters among others, is completed
- Biogas plant completed and inauguration in November 2017
- Decision-makers from various states and cities have expressed interest in the project concept; high potential for future scaling-up of this technology
- The project supported the study about the potential of biogas in India conducted by the DBFZ (German Biomass Research Center) on behalf of the German Biogas Association.
