Hybrid bus technology in South Africa

As of: November 2021

The project has not been commissioned. The project idea has not been pursued further because there were no available hybrid busses suitable for the South African transport market. Costs have emerged for research on the status of the market development of hybrid busses as well as for negotiations with bus manufacturers. Until today the hybrid technology has not reached a market penetration despite its ecological advantages compared to diesel busses. The project’s objective was to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions through the use and dissemination of hybrid busses. In a pilot phase the technology was supposed to be presented and tested on the basis of a demonstration vehicle. In the follow-up its expansion in the greater area of Johannesburg was planned. In addition decision makers would have been advised on an embedment of hybrid busses in a greater sustainable transport concept.
