Mobilizing capital for ecosystem-based adaptation - the value of resilient forests for water management in the tropics.

Objective and activities

Using an integrative approach, OroVerde together with local partner organisations develops measures and innovative governance mechanisms for ecosystem based adaptation in water catchment areas . Ecosystem-based, sustainable land use plans are drawn up in a participatory manner. Economic assessments of the hydrological ecosystem services of the four catchment areas are carried out and innovative financing instruments for the integration of private sector actors are developed. Nature conservation measures for the reconstruction of forests are introduced and monitoring and local capacities in the catchment areas are strengthened. National policies and regulations for ecosystem-based approaches for adaptation to climate change will be promoted. The experiences will be systematised and disseminated in the countries and internationally. Target groups are local actors in the areas and, at national level, decision-makers for policies relating to forest protection and water.

Development of business models for cooperation with the private sector as a instrument for socially acceptable restoration of near-natural forests

State of implementation/results

  • In April 2019, the second international exchange meeting of all project partners (from Mexico, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Cuba and Germany) took place in Mexico.
  • Cooperation agreements between the project in Guatemala and the municipality of San Jerónimo, as well as the Association for Irrigation in the region were set up to enable cooperation with the project and support of project activities in the catchment area.
  • A cooperation agreement was set up between the Forest Protection Agency of the State of Mexico and Pronatura Mexico to strengthen the activities of the project in the region.
  • In the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Cuba, the establishment of tree nurseries has begun for the cultivation of coffee seedlings, shade trees and native plant species in preparation for the implementation of EbA plans.
  • In the communities of San Isidro and Matanzas, Guatemala, 12.74 hectares have been reforested. In addition, forest restoration through natural regeneration was implemented in the San Isidro community.
  • In the Dominican Republic, 8 agroforestry systems with 17,760 coffee plants (catimores) were established for a total of 5 hectares of cultivated land. Furthermore, a climate monitoring and flow measurement system was installed for the Mao river basin
  • On April 2, 2019, the workshop "Governance, Economic Assessment and Financing for Adaptation to Climate Change" took place in Mexico City. This resulted in the background paper on governance, economic valuation and financing of climate change adaptation (in Spanish) "Gobernanza, valoración económica y financiamiento para la adaptación al cambio climático".
  • Presentation of the project at the seminar "Ecosystem-based Adaptation: Opportunities in policy and practice" from 5 to 10 August 2019 at the Academy of Nature Conservation on Vilm.
