Moving Chile
As of: April 2021
Global decarbonisation of the transport sector is necessary to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. Therefore the project supports Chile, a forerunner in Latin America, in developing and piloting a financing mechanism for electric mobility. The financing mechanism is supposed to stimulate private investments in charging infrastructure and/or the purchase of electric vehicles. Also the project supports the Chilean government in putting decarbonisation of the transport sector on the international agenda. A transport event with ministers from relevant ministries is organised for that purpose. During the COP25-presidential year 2020/21 a special meeting of transport ministers will take place. The dialogue of the transport ministers aims at adopting a joint declaration on the role of the transport sector within the NDCs and to develop long-term strategies serving the implementation of mitigation actions.
State of implementation/results
- The project has developed an economic model and three potential financing mechanisms to support the implementation of electric buses in mid-sized Chilean cities.
- Organisation of a regional workshop on the topic "Strenghtening the Role of Transport in new Nationally Determined Contributions" in cooperation with the IKI-project TraCS (www.international-climate-initiative.com/…) and the EU-funded project EUROCLIMA+ under the auspices of the Chilean COP-presidency. Representatives of various Transport Ministries and Environmental Ministries from 13 countries participated in the workshop (www.changing-transport.org/…).
- As part of the COP25 presidency a "Transport Day" was conducted in the Chilean Pavillon. Around 100 representatives from governments, international organisations and civil society participated (www.changing-transport.org/…).
- Production of a video clip for the Chilean COP-presidency on the need to strenghten climate objectives in the transport sector (www.youtube.com/…).
