Pilot Auktion Facility for Methan and Climate Change Mitigation

As of: December 2021

With the Pilot Auction Facility for Methane and Climate Change Mitigation (PAF), the World Bank is launching an innovative fund. Based on the concept of result-based payments, which are based on the independent review and the approval process of the Framework Convention on Climate Change with public participation, cost-effective greenhouse gas emission reductions are to be ensured. The funds deposited will be used via an auction process that promotes competition among providers and thus avoids deadweight effects. The fund is aimed at CDM projects that are wholly or essentially dependent on the sale of international certificates (CER, certified emission reductions) and which, in view of insufficient market demand for certificates, cannot continue their emission reduction activities.

State of implementation/results

  • On March 3rd, 2020 the fourth auction round was successfully carried out with companies from nine countries.
