Objective and activities
The project pursues to identify, analyse and test promising approaches, methods and tools for promoting biodiversity-friendly production, commercialization and marketing; to test and learn from their implementation to further develop them where required; and to systematize the experiences gained in a way that enables both private and public actors to use them. The initial scoping phase is used to identify, review and analyze existing approaches. Based on the results, the project develops implementation strategies for selected productive sectors (e.g. agriculture, fisheries, forestry and tourism) together with cooperation partners in three countries. At the heart of the project are pilot applications of selected methods, mechanisms and tools for promoting biodiversity-friendly production, commercialization and marketing in the partner countries in order to further develop best practices. The project contributes to the mainstreaming of biodiversity into productive sectors.
State of implementation/results
- In a scoping phase, the project investigated the question of which instruments, processes and mechanisms are particularly suitable for promoting biodiversity-friendly production and marketing. The analysis focused on voluntary sustainability standards and labels as well as private financing mechanisms. Results are no published in a summary: www.international-climate-initiative.com/…
- In northeastern Brazil, the project helped to establish a multi-stakeholder initiative on carnauba wax (Initiative for Responsible Carnauba) and also developed good practices for the collection of the natural raw material. Together with the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT), local companies are supported in their efforts. Link to the initiative: www.ethicalbiotrade.org/… – In areas of the Brazilian Amazon where acaí berries are collected or grown, the project is working with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to develop and test ways to measure the impact of sustainable forest management on biodiversity and CO2 storage. - In India, the project together with the Global Nature Fund (GNF) and other partners has developed "Biodiversity Action Plans" for the cultivation of spices (cardamom, nutmeg, pepper, cinnamon and chili) in the biodiversity hotspot Western Ghats (www.globalnature.org/…). - In Mexico, the project analyzed the costs and benefits of producing biodiversity-friendly agave distillates as part of the Bat-Friendly Initiative. This includes monitoring improvements in the conservation of the habitats of bats as agave pollinators.
