Reducing Emissions from Deforestation by Conserving Forest Ecosystems in Protected Areas
As of: June 2020
Objective and activities
The purpose of the project was to assist the population and the authority responsible for protected areas (SERNANP) to administer, engage in participatory management of and thus conserve three areas covering around 303,000 ha in sum. The areas were close to each other, so that, in addition to the core conservation zone, there was a joint buffer zone covering around 580,000 ha. Project activities included building management capacity for the selected protected areas, and investing in measures for sustainable resource use and alternative incomes in the buffer zones. Furthermore, the statutory and legal setting was improved.

State of implementation/results
•Project completed •Functioning participatory management structures developed for the administration of the selected protection areas •Management plans developed for almost all protection areas with the approval of the protection areas authority; plans put in place for the participatory protection of the areas; communications plan developed for effective measures to raise public awareness of the project objectives at local, regional and national levels •A REDD baseline methodology developed for modelling deforestation processes •The protection areas authority and the local population developed a concept for monitoring and protecting the areas; volunteer monitoring measures and patrols are now being carried out. •Park administrations equipped with vehicles and office materials; a control post and a visitors centre built •Sustainable resource use introduced, and alternative incomes created through the promotion of small agricultural projects •REDD-related documents produced to assist with the drafting of legislation
