Restoring degraded coffee landscapes in Ethiopia

In the ‘Yayu Coffee Forest’ biosphere reserve, the majority of the population depends on coffee as a source of income. It is grown in the buffer and transition zone, but low crop yields are forcing farmers to expand their cultivated areas into the nature reserve’s conservation zone. The consequences are a decline in forested areas and a deterioration in soil quality. The project therefore aims to introduce a low-emission and climate-resistant ‘Garden Coffee’ cultivation system. The farmers’ families' home gardens are used for coffee cultivation in order to reduce deforestation and enable the restoration of forest areas. The project involves 3,000 small farmers, who are trained in cultivation, processing and marketing methods. The project is also developing a business model for ‘Garden Coffee’ with regional partners. It offers incentives for investment in this approach, thus contributing to expansion.
State of implementation/results
- Feasibility study on the potential of scaling up sustainable coffee production in the south-western highlands of Ethiopia (project partner: Unique forestry and land use GmbH).
- Presentation and discussion of the study at a workshop held in Addis Ababa on 18 March 2021. Among others, with experts from the coffee sector and forest sector, as well as project implementers who are also active in the Illubabor region.
- The training manual on sustainable coffee cultivation practices produced within the project is now also being used in a GIZ project "Initiative for Sustainable Supply Chains" in the neighbouring region.
- Completion of the baseline and pre-feasibility study to define the pilot regions, framework conditions and target groups.
- Presentation to relevant stakeholders, and local support via fact-finding mission from 1st to 14th of October 2018 (Partner: Unique forestry GmbH).
- Registration of 2500 small-scale coffee producers involved in the project and establishment of 72 field schools.
- Development of a training program to promote sustainable cultivation practices, with the aim of increasing production and quality and improving the living conditions of coffee-producing families.
- Strengthening of nine regional farmers' organizations and one coffee cooperative by providing essential services in the areas of processing, storage and marketing.
- Establishment of a project page on the HRNS homepage, presenting the objectives, main activities and partners.
- The establishment of 54 coffee and shade tree nurseries, managed by coffee producers, has been supported.
