Sino-German Cooperation on Climate Change - Climate Partnership Project

As of: October 2021

China has set itself far-reaching goals in environmental and climate protection until 2030. Within the framework of Sino-German cooperation, the project contributes to an improved implementation of the Chinese NDC and the climate policies and measures described in China's 14th Five-Year Plan. Specifically, it supports climate dialogues at the political level, such as the Working Group on Environment and Climate Change. On the other hand, it promotes informal dialogues among experts. It also strengthens climate cooperation between China, Germany and third countries, and helps to increase funding for climate finance and other green financing. The project also shapes capacity building and knowledge exchange in the climate field. In addition, it organizes annual IKI network meetings that bring together ongoing projects within China and their implementing partners.

State of implementation/results

  • The project initiated the implementation of a Green Finance/Climate Finance work stream in June 2021 with a first German-Chinese expert exchange on sustainable finance.
  • In January 2021, the project launched the new phase of the Sino-German Cooperation on Climate Change (CDKKW) and its three projects (1-Climate Partnership Phase 4, 2-NDC Implementation, 3-Sino-German Cooperation on Emissions Trading, Market Mechanisms and Mitigation of Industrial N2O Emissions)
  • The Sino-German Track II Dialogue (T2D) on climate change and sustainable development has been taking place since December 2020. The dialogue is organised by the National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation (NCSC) and the Federal Environment Agency of Germany (UBA). High-level experts from both countries are working in four working groups on i) emissions trading, ii) green economic growth, iii) emissions data collection and iv) long-term emissions reduction strategies. The Climate Partnership Phase 4 supports this process.
