Solar Resource Atlas for the Mediterranean
As of: January 2021
The project improved the planning framework for developing solar energy systems and for shaping the policy environment affecting the introduction of solar energy systems to the market. It collected and processed high-quality data on the energy potential of the sun in the Mediterranean region and making it available through an internet portal to developers, providers of project funding, and the public. This facilitates investment in solar energy technology, reduces financial risk, improves the information available for support programmes and helps implement solar energy initiatives, such as the Mediterranean Solar Plan.
State of implementation/results
- Project completed.
- High-resolution data on available solar resources covering a long period of time was made available; that was acquired from satellite and Earth observation data and validated by existing ground measurements in the region.
- GIS analyses have been prepared.
- An information system on the internet published the data collected in a user-friendly way.
- Project results and website data were disseminated to a large audience through teaching materials and workshops; target groups were project developers, providers of project funding, representatives from politics, administration, academia and vocational education, and the public.
