Support for Protected Areas in Amazonia (ARPA)

Financing component of the joint-venture project (ARPA) with GIZ. The project objective was to expand and consolidate the Brazilian conservation area system in the Amazon region. These efforts made an important contribution to containing deforestation in the Amazon region, preserving biodiversity and protecting against climate change, while also serving in supplement to the existing Amazon Region Protected Areas (ARPA) Project.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • 28 new protected areas have been demarcated, covering approximately 8.9 million hectares of land
  • Infrastructure has been provided, including administrative buildings and checkpoints , and operating equipment has been procured Studies and documents have been developed regarding the designation of two new protected areas in the state of Acre
  • Training activities have been conducted for more than 100 staff members of protected area administrative bodies
  • Quality management systems have been introduced into protected areas
  • Participatory bodies for protected areas have been established and provided with advisory support
  • The drafting of management plans for protected areas has been supported
  • Market access for non-timber products like rubber, Brazil nuts and tree oils has been improved, for example as a result of local authorities buying these products for school lunches, offering courses on how to establish independent livelihoods and cooperatives, and the creation of a producer cooperative
