Support of the national forest monitoring

As of: January 2022

To counteract deforestation and forest degradation, the project establishes a functioning and institutionalised national monitoring system that meets national & international standards for carbon emissions accounting (CEA). Ecuador can use this system to access results-based payments as part of a mechanism for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+). The project improves the database for CEA and supports ECU in its preparations to reduce emissions through national forest protection measures (REDD+ readiness process). In cooperation with its partners, the project i.a. establishes workflows for deforestation monitoring based on remote sensing data, calibrates the monitoring instruments and assesses deforestation data from 2008 to establish a reference level. Furthermore, it advises the national forestry authority on ways to implement an integrated forestry monitoring system that will collect data on land-use changes, carbon stocks and biodiversity.
