Supporting the design and first implementation steps of the new global framework for biological diversity

As of: April 2021

In 2021, the 15th Conference of the Parties to the CBD will decide on the new global framework for biodiversity after 2020. The project supports partner countries in the design and first steps of implementation of the new global framework. To this end, it helps the project partners to prepare for the CBD COP 15, promotes integrated approaches to biodiversity conservation and climate change and identifies funding instruments for the implementation of the goals of the new biodiversity framework. It also provides advice on topics such as nature-based solutions for climate and biodiversity conservation. As part of the Corona Response Package, the project is developing an approach to integrate biodiversity into the plans and measures to stimulate economic growth. A further focus is on raising awareness among the public and non-governmental sectors and other relevant actors for the link between biodiversity, climate, health and green economic recovery.

State of implementation/results

  • As part of the Corona Response Package, the project will develop a conceptual approach in the nexus "Biodiversity-Climate Health" in cooperation with selected actors, provide policy advice on green recovery and support the integration of biodiversity.
  • Support with regards to the preparations for CBD COP 15, e.g. by analyzing concepts that are relevant to the negotiations and by researching country positions on various negotiation elements.
  • The project analyzes integrated approaches and synergies between biodiversity conservation and climate change in selected partner countries. Both policy level (NDC/NBSAP) and the implementation of nature-based solutions (NbS) play an important role. A further study for the improvement of selected funding instruments is being developed and will focus on the effective implementation of the new Global Biodiversity Framework.
  • Development of a communication strategy on global biodiversity issues, the new global biodiversity framework and the implantation of the CBD. This includes concrete public relations activities during various international events (e.g. International Day of Biodiversity 2020, World Environment Day 2020), international discussion rounds as well as social media presentations, which are intended to sensitize the public to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
  • Public events with input from the project *
  • 27-28 April 2020, 11th Petersberg Climate Dialogue
  • 22 May 2020, UN World Biodiversity Day
  • 5 June 2020 World Environment Day in Colombia
