The One Planet Multi-Partner Trust Fund: catalyzing the implementation of SDG12

As of: October 2021

At the World Summit for Sustainable Development 2012 (Rio + 20) the governments decided on the “10 Year of Framework of Programs on Sustainable Consumption and Production” (10YFP). The 10YFP serves to implement the 2030 Agenda – here in particular SDG 12 (ensuring sustainable consumption and production methods). To implement the 10YFP, the multi-stakeholder partnership "One Planet Network" was formed. It six programmes iclude the topics public procurement, buildings and construction, tourism, food systems, consumer information and Lifestyles and Education. A multi-partner trust fund (MPTF) was set up at the UN Development Program (UNDP) to carry out country activities. The six UN institutions UNEP, UNDP, FAO, UN WTO, UN Habitat and UNOPS are involved. As part of the regular “Call for Expression of Interest”, interested countries have the opportunity to apply for support from the network.

State of implementation/results

  • The promotion of sustainable consumption and production methods is a central concern of the federal government, also with regard to climate protection. The “One Planet Network” is the central implementation mechanism of SDG 12 and participation in the MPTF is seen by the BMU as the most efficient way of contributing to the promotion of sustainable consumption and production patterns on an international level.
