Trinational Forest Conservation Area (Congo Basin)

The purpose of the project was to preserve the natural habitats in the project region, which covers some 35,000 km2, and to conserve its carbon reservoir. Measures included developing and implementing sustainable and participatory land-use management strategies, controlling forest and game resources, and promoting appropriate socio-economic development.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed.
  • Land use plans for the TNS have been completed and adopted.
  • Infrastructure and equipment has been made available to the tri-national brigade to combat poaching; the brigade has begun its work.
  • Infrastructure has been improved in the project area for monitoring and development of tourism, for example by upgrading landing strips, renovating bridges, constructing checkpoints and observation platforms, park buildings, accommodations, sanitary facilities, and procuring vehicles and motorboats.
  • Study conducted on the biological diversity and carbon sequestration in Lobeke National Park.
