Thematic selection procedure
The current challenges in climate action and biodiversity conservation are addressed annually in the thematic selection procedure. Based on these challenges, funding priorities are defined, which are further used in the submission of project outlines. Depending on the funding priority, the funding amount per project can range from 5 to 30 million Euros.
Next thematic selection procedure call
The next call for the thematic selection procedure will take place in the second half of 2022. The International Climate Initiative (IKI) had postponed the 2021 thematic call in order to be able to optimally match the funding priorities with the results of the major climate and biodiversity summits in 2021. The postponement also enables the IKI to better respond to the needs of its partner countries and to achieve even more effective climate protection and biodiversity conservation.

How are the projects selected?
The project selection procedure is carried out in two stages.
In the first stage, the ministries involved in the IKI pre-select promising project outlines based on the mandatory requirements. These outlines are evaluated in detail, looking at the formal and technical criteria specified in the funding information. The IKI decides which project outlines to pursue at the second stage, depending on the outcome of this assessment, technical analysis and the funds available.
The second stage of the selection procedure begins with a notification sent to all lead implementing organisations on the outcome of the first evaluation. The lead implementing organisations with successful project outlines are then invited to submit a detailed project proposal. The applicable requirements and templates to be used are provided electronically.
We recommend that a preparation phase should be planned in advance to ensure that the project can be optimally aligned with local needs in cooperation with all project partners. The costs for the preparation phase is also eligible for funding and will be deducted from the main project’s budget accordingly.
