Two-day IKI interface workshop in Germany with 14 priority countries

A woman stands at a lectern speaking to an audience of about 20 people in a modern, bright conference room with large glass windows. On the left, there is a flipchart with notes; on the right, a roll-up banner of the "International Climate Initiative (IKI)." The attendees sit at round tables with water bottles, glasses, and notepads. Green vegetation can be seen outside the windows in the background.

Every two years, the IKI organises its interface workshop to strengthen exchange and cooperation with the IKI priority countries in climate action and biodiversity conservation.

On 17 and 18 June 2025, the IKI interface project managers met representatives of the relevant IKI ministries for a joint workshop.

In its 2030 strategy, the IKI has defined clear geographical priorities: it focuses its funding predominantly on its priority countries. In these countries, there are so-called IKI interface projects that operate offices in the capital cities. In addition to their own country-specific project mandats, the interface projects are also responsible for a close cooperation with the competent ministries for climate, energy, and biodiversity and the local German embassies. They also take on tasks such as interconnecting all IKI projects in the country to develop synergies for project work. These projects are implemented by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) using its existing external structure in the partner countries.

Technical exchange on priority topics

The two-day workshop paved the way for more effective, better coordinated, and strategically oriented cooperation between Germany and its partner countries in global climate action and biodiversity conservation. The agenda concentrated on the central fields of action of the IKI Strategy up to 2030.

Several round tables with chairs are scattered around, with notepads, glasses, and water bottles on them. In the background, there is a flipchart, colourful moderation cards, and an IKI roll-up banner; outside the windows, green vegetation is visible.

The focus was on exchange and shared learning on topics such as the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), industrial decarbonisation, the protection of biodiversity, international climate negotiations, and the mobilisation of public and private financing.

Furthermore, the workshop strengthened the interconnection of the interface projects and provided new impulses for more intensive cooperation with local partner institutions. Equipped with fresh approaches and a keener understanding of the German federal government's priorities in terms of climate policies, the project managers are now returning to their partner countries.
