This includes recommendations for improving municipal/city access to funding instruments for climate change related work and for better integrating climate change into planning mechanisms.

Chewing over consumption-based carbon emissions accounting

Conventional thinking about mitigating climate change is based on strategies to lower carbon emissions arising from production. By exploring the role that increasing consumption plays in driving carbon emissions, consumption-based carbon emissions accounting might provide us with new insights into challenges to and opportunities for driving the shift to a low-carbon economy. Sustainable consumption together with sustainable production patterns are integral to the 2030 global agenda for sustainable development, specifically to Sustainable Development Goal 12. Many countries are already undertaking research into consumption-based carbon emissions, the approach might be particularly useful at a local government level and for businesses, especially along their product supply chain.

Opportunities of Sustainable Mobility

Mobility is essential for the social and economic development of a country. Reliable transport systems have positive impacts on a country's economy and improve access to jobs, education and health care. However, current trends in the transport sector are mostly unsustainable. The tremendous growth of motorised transport is one of the key challenges for sustainable development worldwide. With 27%, the transport sector already contributes the second highest share of energy-related CO2 emissions globally and is the fastest growing sector in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These trends will continue if sustainable transport solutions are not systematically introduced.

Mobilising Climate Finance

Developing countries in particular face enormous challenges in mobilising financial resources and using funding for the necessary climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. The mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the preservation of natural carbon reservoirs and the adaptation to the impacts of climate change all require financial resources - to build solar power systems and wind turbines, for energy-efficient building refurbishment, to expand public transport systems, for reforestation, to strengthen flood protection measures, to set up protected areas and much more.

The IKI supports more than 100 renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. The factsheet presents a very prominent wind energy investment project in South Africa, Jeffrey´s Bay Wind Farm, co-funded by the IKI.

Renewable Energies, Emission Reduction and Sustainable Economic Growth in Chile

In recent years, the expansion of renewable electricity generation capacities in Chile has experienced rapid growth. More than 40% of the Chilean electricity is currently produced by renewable energies, of which one third comes from wind and solar energy. Latest potential analyses show that Chile could cover its electricity demand more than a hundred times with renewable energy sources.
