Supporting Initiative 20 by 20: A country-led effort to bring 20 million hectares of degraded land in Latin America and the Caribbean into restoration by 2020

As of: August 2019

Objective and activities

The project supports the country-driven Initiative 20 by 20. It aims to initiate restoration of 20 million hectares of degraded land in Latin America and the Caribbean region by 2020 and thereby contributes to the Bonn Challenge. It supports partner governments in combined effort of research organisations, regional programs and the private sector. Project partners conduct a cost-effectiveness-analysis for selecting restoration schemes, identify new financial mechanisms through engagement of the private sector and support partner countries to develop a strategical plan for restoration. Additionally, agricultural and environmental authorities will be supported. Local communities will benefit from improved land functionality, reduced soil erosions, biodiversity conservation and the restoration of hydrological processes. Ultimately, the project has a significant impact in mitigating the effect of climate change and decreasing the vulnerability of the region.

State of implementation/results

Project Achievements:

  • Facilitation of the annual 20x20 conference in Buenos Aires 06/2019. Ministers from Latinamerican countries issued a joint declaration to reinforce their committment to Forest Landscape Restoration.
  • A new Task Force on Secondary and degraded forest was created to support collaboration between Initiative 20x20 technical partners. Task Forces are open to any individual working for member organizations. More information: initiative20x20.org/…
  • A webinar on Biodiversity and Restoration took place on May 22, 2019. initiative20x20.org/…
  • The Initiative 20x20 team has secured over $345 million dollars in private investment from financial partners. The investment will influence the restoration of over 13.4 million hectares of land.
  • In November 2018, the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR) in Mexico successfully completed a six-year effort to restore one million hectares of land. The project focused on planting native tree species and species that will aid in soil restoration. A full summary of the project, in Spanish, can be found here: www.gob.mx/…
