Cities in Asia develop climate sensitive adaptation plans

As of: April 2018

Objective and activities

The project was raising awareness of the effects of climate change, enhancing knowledge and boosting capacities to act in municipalities in India and the Philippines. With the help of the project, researchers were working together with an international network of municipalities and four cities in each of the two countries to identify specific risks associated with climate change, predict future scenarios and develop decision-making aids. This work provided a foundation on which to build municipal climate change adaptation strategies.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • Data on infrastructure, precipitation and temperature collected in eight cities as the basis for modelling the impacts of climate change
  • Based on these data sets vulnerability assessments conducted and adaption options developed
  • Interviews carried out with around 560 residents of the pilot cities to gauge their perception of climate change
  • Municipal guidelines drafted to ensure a systematic process of adaptation
  • Information centre for climate change and disaster prevention in Baguio, Philippines founded
  • Production of the video “Knowledge and Action – Climate Change Impacts in Asian Cities and Ways to Adapt“
