Climate Change Adaptation in the Caribbean: The EbA-Facility

As of: December 2019

Objective and activities

The EbA-Facility will support Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean financially and technically to implement Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA). There is a particular demand for EbA-investments with small and medium volume (0.5m USD to 1.5m USD) with specific components on capacity development. The facility will operate as a sinking fund using the structure of the existing Caribbean Biodiverstiy Fund (CBF). It will complement the existing endowment fund of the CBF (whose capital stock will remain in the long term) to meet urgent needs for short-term financing. Through the support of measures to protect, to improve the sustainable use of and to rehabilitate coastal ecosystems relevant for adaptation to climate change (especially coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds), a contribution to reduce the vulnerability of SIDS to the negative impacts of climate change will be made.

State of implementation/results

- At the end of 2018, the first v "Call for proposals" was launched
- a lot of interest. Eleven individual projects were selected in SIDS and are now to be implemented
- the second "Call for proposal" will be launched in early 2020
