Climate Protection and Electric Vehicles in China - Field Tests, Case Studies and Policy Advice on Integrating Renewables into the Growth Market for Electric Vehicles

Objective and activities
This project addressed the interface between transport, the energy industry, climate protection, innovation and the market. Relevant decision-makers received support in developing strategies for rolling out electric transport in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This included grid integration of renewable energy and using intelligent grid and charging technologies (smart grids), for example. The project has implemented model and pilot projects, conducted analyses and studies, and carried out dialogue processes.

- Expert workshop on the possible harmonisation of German and Chinese approaches to aligning electric vehicles with the fuel economy standards and fleet CO2 targets carried out (served to implement the memorandum of understanding between the German Federal Environment Ministry and the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on vehicle fuel efficiency)
- Studies and workshops carried out on various topics, including an in-depth analysis of the fuel economy standards in China compared with other economic regions, strategies for climate-friendly grid integration of renewable energy using smart grid technology, strategy for vehicle-related life-cycle optimisation through battery recycling
- Pilot and demonstration project prepared in collaboration with the German Association of the Automotive Industry; Sino-German Initiative set up to promote an efficient charging infrastructure, controlled charging and the integration of renewable energy
- Feasibility study on car-sharing in China and the integration of electric vehicles completed
- In July 2014 Chancellor Angela Merkel and Miao Wei, Minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), opened the 'Sino-German Electric Vehicle Charging Project Conference'
- The project was member of the international advisory board of the consortium “China EV 100” which has been established by the Chinese Government
