Climate Protection with Renewable Energies on the Galapagos Islands in consideration of Electricity Production with Jatropha Oil

Objective and activities
The government of Ecuador and other relevant actors for the production of electrical energy have been advised in the planning and implementation of an adequate mix of different renewable energies on the islands of Floreana and Isabela ( as pilot schemes for the other two islands of Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal). The focus has been on the coordination in so called hybrid systems of Jatropha oil operated generators and other renewable energies like wind power and photovoltaics, as well as the sustainable production of Jatropha oil on the Ecuadorian mainland. Furthermore contact between German knowledge holders in the field of renewable energies and the Ecuadorian actors has been established and cultivated. Finally experiences with so called smart grids have been collected that are also interesting and deployable in the renewable energy matrix of other countries.

- Retrofitting two electricity generators, which now primarily run on jatropha oil for 80% of their annual operations.
- Installing a hybrid system and a smart grid on Isabela Island.
- Establishing a commercial organisational structure for producing and processing jatropha nuts in an environmentally sound manner.
- Expanding jatropha harvest from 137 tonnes in 2011 to 213 tonnes in 2012, and jatropha oil yields from 36,000 litres (2011) to 50,000 litres (2012).
- Increased the annual income of around 1,200 families producing jatropha.
- Training activities and a study visit organised on renewable energy and energy efficiency.
