Conservation Measures in Five Ecosystems

As of: April 2018

Objective and activities

The purpose of the project was to promote the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of five areas of national and international importance, with special regard to preventing and adapting to climatic changes and preserving biological diversity. The protected area administrations were strengthened by providing equipment and environmental communication activities. In addition, training was provided on fire surveillance and control and on sustainable resource use, with particular regard to fisheries, cattle management and farming. In order to improve cooperation with stakeholders, coordination workshops were organised together with municipalities, local stakeholder groups and CONANP.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • The procurement of equipment valued at around 1/3 of the funding volume and has enabled the participating protection areas to develop solid infrastructure and facilitate mobility and communication for CONANP staff
  • Awareness-raising among selected population groups through comprehensive environmental communication campaigns
  • Training and equipment for fire brigades
  • Participating protected areas now have a significantly improved knowledge base for future management activities and a monitoring system that can detect changes in vegetation cover
  • Development of pilot examples to plan sustainable resource use in protected areas
