Development of a CO2 baseline, monitoring and capacity building for REDD to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in Thailand

Objective and activities
The project wanted to create a map, which would have used the carboncontent in Thai forests as a baseline, and it intended to compile a web-based databaseto accompany it. The Thai government could have used the data as a solidscientific foundation for planning measures to reduce emissions fromdeforestation and forest degradation (REDD+). The project also wanted toestablish a transparent carbon monitoring system (REDDLite). The data wassupposed to be linked with and made visible through the Google Earth internetplatform. This would have demonstrated how forest analyses and newly developed monitoringsoftware may be combined and used to create emission maps. The project wantedto train the forest and national park authorities to use the monitoring system.The Thai authorities also would have tested new REDD+ financing mechanisms in aregional pilot project. The project ought to have shared results andexperiences in regional workshops with the neighboring countries Laos, Cambodiaand Vietnam so that they could have been used in other areas throughout theregion.
State of implementation/results
- As part of the ‘National Community Forest Network Meeting’, an exchange took place with key interest groups in the field of community forest management.
- Government representatives and project staff took part in a workshop on ‘PDD development in Xe Pian National Park, southern Laos,’ which focused on capacity building and knowledge transfer with the CarBi project in Laos and Viet Nam.
- The refusal to grant official rights to fly over the relevant areas, which were the basis for continuation of the project, led to its premature termination.
