Energy Solutions for Cities of the Future

As of: November 2018

Objective and activities

The project aims to empower cities to deploy renewable energy through a) increased knowledge on policy and regulatory frameworks, b) capacity building at municipal level, c) tools and information on technology solutions, and d) identification of synergies among cities to share best practice and replicate innovative solutions. It will empower municipalities to design and implement change in the way energy is produced, distributed, and consumed in cities, leading to sustainable urban development and mitigating GHG emissions. The project will focus on medium-sized cities, informing national and municipal level policy-makers, city planners, private energy institutions, utilities and investors and leverage existing knowledge of networks such as ICLEI, C40, and other entities.

State of implementation/results

  • Identification of viable projects in the three countries.
  • The project is developing tools and methodologies which may be directly replicable in other settings, or used as a basis for adjustment in other geographical locations order to reduce GHG emissions worldwide. Policy guidelines will be developed to scale up renewable energy applications at the city level. Encouraging policies and measures at local level towards enhanced deployment of renewable energies will benefit directly the NDC implementation of the given countries.
