Development of a monitoring system for biodiversity and climate change in the Selva Maya region

As of: November 2019

Objective and activities

The overall goal of the project is the promotion of regionally coordinated monitoring of biodiversity and climate change in the Selva Maya region, the results of which are to be incorporated in policy-making and thereby contributing toward the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity in the region. By strengthening the political and institutional framework, conditions for regional co-operation as well as the fostering of experience exchange and capacity-building, cross-border monitoring approaches will be supported. In addition the project aims at improving the communication between the scientific community and political decision-makers with regard to climate change and biodiversity. Policy makers will be sensitized for the relevance of environmental indicators in their respective area of work. At the same time monitoring institutions are assisted in the processing of the results and their effective communication to decision makers in respective sectors and at various levels.

State of implementation/results

Introduction of the monitoring software SMART ( for the adaptive management of protected areas in Belize, Guatemala and Mexico

  • Fostering technical capacities in monitoring institutions (topics such as remote sensing, water quality, management effectiveness) and community-based monitoring (bird diversity, forest dynamics, maya nut yields)
  • Supporting cross-border exchange and collaboration on various monitoring topics (remote sensing, bird diversity, water holes and the wildlife dependent on them, scarlet macaws as a charismatic landscape species, water quality, meteorology and climate)
  • Improved communication effectiveness of relevant monitoring results to policy makers and the public.
