Promoting Ecosystem based Adaptation through Friends of EbA (FEBA)

As of: July 2019

Objective and activities

Friends of EbA (FEBA) is a global network of agencies and organisations involved in Ecosystem based Adaptation (EbA) at the policy and field implementation levels. This project will enhance mutual learning and sharing of experiences between these organisations to make EbA more effective and demonstrate its value-addition as an adaptation option. The generated knowledge and collaboration will contribute towards informing and improving adaptation planning processes and practices at national, regional and especially the global levels (UNFCCC, Nairobi Work Programme).

State of implementation/results

  • Approx. 50 organisations and more than 120 individuals cooperate on EbA-topics through the FEBA network
  • Support of the UNFCCC secretariat in developing the synthesis report on climate change and ecosystems
  • Development of standards and quality criteria for EbA, publication of results
  • Organisation of side events such as the “EbA knowledge day” and a seminar series during the climate negotiations
  • FEBA Newsletter 2018-2019: www.iucn.org/…
  • 5th EbA Knowledge Day, 19 June 2019, Bonn, Germany
  • In Decision 14/5 the CBD COP14 “invites organizations, including the Friends of Ecosystem-based Adaptation and the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction, and their respective members, to continue to support Parties in their efforts to promote ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction and the approaches to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction of indigenous peoples and local communities”
  • In the same Decision, the COP14 adopts the voluntary guidelines for the design and effective implementation of ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, whose text names FEBA as a key network available to support the efforts of raising awareness and building capacity, i.e. the third main overarching consideration for EbA and eco-DRR design and implementation.
