From farm to fork: Mainstreaming biodiversity into food value chains

Objective and activities

The aim of the project is to integrate biodiversity issues and ecosystem services into the value chains of bananas and pineapples. Pilot farms with biodiversity-friendly measures are identified and provide input for the improvement of the biodiversity criteria in national and international certifications and procurement guidelines of companies. A biodiversity check and a training program are developed. A Biodiversity Innovation Fund (BIF) supports producers in the testing and implementation of biodiversity-friendly production. A payment system for the construction of bio-corridors in productive landscapes is established and will allow stakeholders in the value chain to invest in the connectivity of important ecosystems. Consumer awareness of biodiversity-friendly produced bananas and pineapples is being stepped up and acceptance of the associated higher consumer prices is encouraged. The experiences are systematically documented and disseminated from national to international level.

State of implementation/results

From 21 to 24 June, the first Hackathon took place in Costa Rica, a productive conference for software and hardware developers entitled "Hack the Farm: biodiversity solutions in agriculture". A technological prototype with two aspects was developed: 1. the virtual recording of responsible practices in relation to biodiversity on banana and pineapple farms; 2. a convincingly focused presentation of practices for European consumers. 12 teams of students and technology companies took part in the event. In the senior category, "NW Consulting Services" took first place with a mobile application prototype called "Bio-Ruption", which systematises the value chain and carries out biodiversity diagnostics and an analysis of the progress of responsible practices. This information is also transmitted to the consumer via a QR code. The project plans to support the further development of this application and use it under Component IV. In the Junior category, first place went to a prototype application that diagnoses and documents the state of biodiversity in pineapple and banana farms and displays the results to the consumer with a QR code.   • On 12 June, the first round table was held with the Global Nature Fund (GNF) and representatives of the food sector from the private sector and public institutions. Results from a comparative analysis of relevance criteria for biodiversity in employment standards and norms of exporters and food companies were presented and discussed.
  • Within the framework of an interdisciplinary workshop in September 2019, the project promoted the institutional networking of key public sector actors in the field of biodiversity and agriculture in Costa Rica. The result of this meeting is the establishment of a joint working group in which the participating institutions can coordinate their strategic planning and activities. This body is also an important instrument for the project in coordinating and implementing with its political partners.
