Green Cooling Initiative

Objective and activities

The project helps design more efficient processes and structures in cooling and climate control and accelerates the transfer of emission-reducing technologies in developing countries. To this end, partners are setting up a ‘green cooling’ network to spur cooperation between technology providers and users in industrialised countries, developing countries and emerging economies. This will also create incentives for investment in climate-friendly technologies. The experience gained flows into the new technology transfer mechanism under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

  • Solutions in technology road maps for cooling, climate control and foam developed
  • Financial and human participation in 'Technology Executive Committee '(TEC)
  • GCI with more than 60 network members of companies, organizations, research and government institutions
  • Exchange with manufacturers from developing countries and emerging economies promoted through workshops and side events among others
  • Dialogue with partner countries initiated through international events and specialist forums
  • Website for the 'Green Cooling Initiative' network with information material, technical resources and a virtual dialogue forum on sustainable refrigeration including a data base with extensive analysis regarding mitigation scenarios established in the RAC sector
  • GCI / GCAI presented at the Network meeting of the African and West-Asian Ozone Officers and the Atmosphere Conference in Barcelona in April 2016
  • Side Event together with UNEP U4E, Bosch Siemens domestic appliances and the TEC representative on the topic „the importance of energy efficiency under the UN Technology Mechanism“; and one with UNIDO and NDE Ghana on the topic technology transfer in the RAC Sector in April 2016
  • Training for technicians in Ghana on natural refrigerants and installation / maintenance of R290 AC appliances in April 2016
  • Technology partnership on solar cooling for fishery products with Lake View Fisheries in Kenya and Jetwings Hotels in Sri Lanka formalized
  • Experts Day at the Chillventa Exhibition 2016 in Nuremberg, Germany, for industrial and political actors on advantages of natural refrigerants and on marketable new energy efficient technologies
  • Side Events at the 28th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol in Kigali, Rwanda:
  • 1. R290 air conditioners (joint with UNIDO, FECO, Midea) 2. Integrating the HFC Amendment in ongoing national mitigation actions (joint with GIZ Proklima) 3. First Conversion Projects from HFCs to Hydrocarbons in the Refrigeration Manufacturing Sector, Walton, Bangladesh and Palfridge, Swaziland (joint with UNIDO and UNDP)
  • National stakeholder workshops in Mauritius, Namibia, Ghana and Kenya to discuss and verify the results of the respective RAC inventories
  • During the "Green Cooling Week" in Berlin, international political and industrial representatives among others participate in an innovation workshop and visit of the atmosphere conference in September 2017
  • As part of the technology partnership, a solar model cold store was designed for Kenya using best practice technologies for refrigeration systems, insulation and the predominant decentralised power supply. The work will be completed in the second half of April 2018 and a team from GIZ and HEAT will carry out the installation and commissioning together with the local partner Lake Vierw Fisheries and Kenyan refrigeration technicians. Deutsche Welle plans to send a reporter to document the construction
