Objective and activities

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) are highly affected by climate change impacts, but often have limited capacities to formulate science-based implementation strategies, to access financial resources and to fully represent their interests in negotiations. The project aims to sustainably enhance capacities through several areas of activities. This includes capacity building for developing and implementing science-based adaptation and mitigation strategies. Further, it aims to improve access to climate finance in partner countries and to shape a 1.5°C compatible climate finance architecture. IMPACT supports the partner regions in representing their regions' interests in international negotiations and to implement the Paris Agreement.

State of implementation/results

Small island developing states (SIDS) and the least developed countries (LDCs) are strongly affected by climate change but have limited capacity to formulate science-based implementation strategies to benefit from climate finance and defend their interests in international negotiations. The central aim of the project is sustainable capacity building in several dimensions in the partner regions. This includes skills for the development and implementation of science-based adaptation and mitigation strategies, access to climate finance in partner countries, and the creation of a 1.5 degree compatible climate finance architecture. IMPACT also supports the partner regions in representing their interests in international negotiations and implementing the Paris Agreement.

  • Current project developments are regularly published on the IMPACT webpage and can be followed via a newsletter and blog entries. In addition, instruments and publications developed under IMPACT can be viewed on the website:…
  • IMPACT partners organise events to present the latest scientific finds and instruments to scientists, negotiators and ministers from LDC and SIDS to inform their interests in international climate negotiations and other relevant fora. --. In addition IMPACT provides scientific and technical support for representatives of SIDS and LDCs through their respective Chairs in key climate related negotiations (e.g. UNFCCC SBs, IPCC plenary sessions, COP, GCF Board Meetings).
