Integrated Planning to Implement the CBD Strategic Plan and Increase Ecosystem Resilience to Climate Change

As of: November 2018

Objective and activities

This project will increase capacity to optimize land use planning to support biodiversity and climate change adaptation objectives. Through a combination of global reviews and in-country assessments, target countries will be provided with advice, guidance, and assistance in demonstration activities. The project results will provide recommendations for legal planning tools. Policy dialogues will attempt to ensure that the necessary political leadership can translate recommendations into implementation and sustained action in their countries. Knowledge products and tools will be made available to a wider audience of decision makers and stakeholders. Visibility of results and lessons will be ensured through participation and profiling of project progress and outcomes at key international forums.

State of implementation/results

  • In December 2017, stakeholders endorsed the climate change strategy for Nsumbu and Katavi National Parks at validation meetings in Zambia and Tanzania respectively.
  • In Vietnam, three provinces were involved in the planning of the new strategy, which foresees a reduction in rice cultivation and is shifting to flood farming.
  • In Colombia, the "Stakeholders Workshop for Land Use Planning in the Colombian Caribbean" was held in March 2017.
  • At the international level, one of the most important events was the UNFCCC COP 23, where the project organized a side event to present the project experience and outcomes.
