Marine protected area management in the East Pacific (study)

Objective and activities

A study was conducted to assess the ecological relationships among various marine protected areas in the East Pacific as well as their vulnerability to climate change. The protected areas fall within the territories of Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Ecuador, and contain ecosystems with high levels of biological diversity. Drawing on this basis, the impacts of economic activity in these areas were analysed, and practice-oriented approaches were formulated to ensure that they are protected efficiently and that the required investments are forthcoming. This information was fed into recommendations for a joint strategy among the four countries on conservation and sustainable use.
