Development of NAMA for energy efficient cooling and air conditioning in industry and business (Green Chillers) in Indonesia

As of: April 2018

Objective and activities

The project provides support to Indonesia in creating and implementing a reliable framework for fostering energy efficiency in the cooling and air-conditioning sector. Since national demand for these technologies is rapidly increasing, improving their energy efficiency could mean a key contribution to the national climate change mitigation goals. The project establishes inventories and projections of reduction potentials in the industrial and cooling sectors; advises in the development of nationally appropriate mitigation action (NAMA) with specific measures for using energy efficient cooling technologies; and provides policy-makers with information on options for promoting emission reductions through NAMAs and for creating incentives for fostering efficient cooling and air-conditioning technologies. In addition, the project supports the development of a financing strategy and an economic efficiency analysis, and for submitting these to the UNFCCC.

State of implementation/results

  • Sector analyses started for developing NAMA
  • Website for existing training materials on NAMA established
  • Main responsibility for developing national GHG inventory for the cooling sector established with the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE)
  • Workshop on "Developing a RAC NAMA"
  • Event on “Promoting Green Chillers” in Jakarta
  • Technical workshop on “Safety and Energy Efficiency Standard of Green Chiller” in Bogor
  • MoU between EBTKE and PERTAMINA for piloting energy efficient cooling appliances using natural refrigerants signed for the sites of PERTAMINA
  • Indonesian delegation in Germany: Chillventa participation and organization of the first „German-Indonesian Dialogue on Energy Efficiency: Climate-friendly refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) in commercial and industrial applications“
  • MoU between EBTKE and Phapros on the implementation of two propane-based chillers for the pharmaceutical production signed
  • MoU between the University of Indonesia and EBTKE and installation of the first pilot project: a green chiller in a new university auditorium which serves for research and training purposes at the same time
  • In addition two green chillers installed for training of technicians at the polytechnic university in Bandung and Bali in May 2017
  • For the certification of local technicians, two "train the trainer" training on the safety and energy efficient handling of natural refrigerants conducted, including a final examination through the Indonesian certification body BNSP in July 2017
  • First Indonesian inventory of the RAC sector completed and presented to more than 70 representatives of ministries (energy, industries, environment and planning) and of private economy (chiller manufactures and their suppliers)
