Natural Solutions to Climate Change in the Pacific Islands Region: Implementing Ecosystem-based Adaptation

Objective and activities
The project supports ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) to climate change in the three Pacific countries Fiji, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. The intended outcome of the PEBACC (Pacific Ecosystem-based Adaptation to Climate Change) project is that EbA is integrated into development, climate change adaptation responses, and natural resource management policy and planning processes in three Pacific island countries providing replicable models for other countries in the region. Using a holistic approach, the project identifies the threats (climatic and non-climatic) to vital ecosystem services, for example rising sea levels or water course pollution. Maintaining ecosystem services is the foundation for successful adaptation to climate change. In order to counter these threats, the project fosters the development of alternative sources of income and supports the implementation of EbA measures that conserve ecosystems and increase people’s resilience to the consequences of climate change.
State of implementation/results
- The project sites are: Macuata province and Taveuni island (Fiji), Port-Vila and Tanna island (Vanuatu), Honiara and Wagina (Solomon Islands).
- Project communication materials developed and project’s profile promoted through side events at various regional and international fora.
- Aerial reconnaissance of field sites undertaken in Fiji and Vanuatu.
- The project participates in processes to develop Vanuatu’s new National Sustainable Development Plan 2016-2030 and multiple additional policy processes and agendas in the partner countries.
- ESRAM (Ecosystem and Socio-economic Resilience Analysis and Mapping) studies were completed with support of the project team and in close collaboration with local communities as well as stakeholder groups in the project locations; Eba options for the project sites were assessed.
- Demonstration activities were identified and planned for the project sites.
