Protection of Wetlands in the Cape Floristic Region

Objective and activities
The aim of this project was to establish a protected area and to implement central adaptation measures that were identified in the study "Vulnerability and Adaptation Assessment for the Western Cape". That included effective fire management, controlling invasive species and improving the management of coastal wetlands to achieve better flood protection. In addition, the project also contributed to adapt sustainable farming methods in the region.
State of implementation/results
- Project completed
- Wetland areas restored; drained areas re-watered (550 hectares).
- Invasive plants removed.
- Original native wildlife of the region reintroduced, for example buffalo and hippopotamus.
- Fire-fighting units equipped; fire breaks established.
- Fire prevention training carried out with land owners.
