Rehabilitation of degraded lands with native tree species (Paraserianthes falcataria) in Kalimantan, Indonesia

Objective and activities
The objective of the project is to provide proof of concept for forest rehabilitation on degraded non-forest land in Kalimantan. Demonstration areas of at least 300 ha are planted with the native tree species Albasia (Paraserianthes Falcataria) in order to test different silvicultural options (intercropping, mixed systems etc.) and to explore market opportunities along the value chain. Innovative, lightweight wood products will be developed and promoted in cooperation with wood processing companies from Java. Private and public investors will be identified for upscaling. Through testing different, fast growing tree species, which can later be planted and used by the industry without further cutting down natural forests, the project contributes to a more sustainable timber value chain. Furthermore, the project will inform the current REDD+ discussion in Indonesia on how to include the private sector in sustainable +-activities (carbon stock enhancement) beyond carbon markets.

- The project presented the potential of light wood products on an international furniture fair in Jakarta
- In the project area in East Kalimantan Fairventures, UNIQUE and Borneo Institute carried out analyses, field visits and data collection. Furthermore, a system to monitor growth- and survival rates of seedlings was established and FPIC (Free, prior and informed consent) measures were carried out in four villages with 461 small scale farmers participated
- 11 farmers were educated in the area of tree nursery and management in Sukabumbi, Westjava. The production of seedlings started in 5 nurseries.
- The project organized a design competition for lightwood products together with the education facility PIKA Semarang that specialises in the wood sector.
