Support Project on SDG Implementation and Review Processes

As of: December 2019

Objective and activities

Following the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by the UN General Assembly in September 2015, countries now have to establish corresponding review and follow-up processes. A robust review process is essential for the effective implementation of the 2030 Agenda. At the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) in 2016, BMZ and BMUB jointly presented the “Partners for Review” (P4R) initiative to support exchange and cooperation on reporting and review approaches between interested countries. Accordingly, a BMZ global project has been set up. The present project outline shapes the complementary contribution on BMUB side with the overarching goal of strengthening national Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) review and follow-up processes, thus contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation as well as conservation of biodiversity. In addition, technical support is provided to BMUB around the 2030 Agenda such as bridging SDG- and NDC-related processes.

State of implementation/results

The 6th network meeting of the "Partners for Review" (P4R) Network took place from 22./23. May 2019 in Oaxaca, Mexico. E.g. it focused on the sub-national reporting. At the network meeting, the "Whole of Government" discussion paper was published (www.partners-for-review.de/… .pdf).

  • In addition, the P4R Secretariat participated in various global and regional events under the 2030 Agenda with side events and contributions: High-level Political Forum (HLPF) 2019, Asia / Pacific Regional Forum (UNESCAP), Regional Forum Europe (UNECE), Latin America and Caribbean Regional Forum (UNECLAC) and the UN Expert Group Meeting.
  • The 7th Network Meeting of the "Partners for Review" network will be held from 11.-13. November 2019 in Hanoi, Vietnam.
  • From 08.-12. April 2019 a professional exchange for the establishment and development of statistical systems and SDG-relevant implementation between environmental and SDG statisticians from the Latin American area and German and European actors took place in cooperation with the UN Regional Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC)
  • On 19 June 2019, BMU and BMZ organized the first national preparatory conference for the HLPF in Berlin. Federal Environment Minister Schulze and Development Minister Müller discussed with high-ranking representatives from politics, civil society, science and industry how more ambitious implementation action can be achieved. The project supported the organization of the event.
  • The Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR), published in September, underscores the need for global ambition. The project supported the consultation of scientists through a regional workshop in Amman, Jordan, on 29./30. April 2019. To disseminate the core messages of the GSDR, a workshop will be held in Brussels in October 2019 (target group European stakeholders). Further workshops in Berlin (German stakeholders) and the regions involved in the consultation workshops will follow (November: Africa, Indonesia; 1st quarter 1/2020: Jamaica). The aim is to promote the translation of key messages into action-oriented measures using the identified synergies and interactions. In terms of content, concept and organization, the project will support the dissemination workshops in Indonesia and Jamaica in cooperation with the IKI Strategic Environmental Dialogue project.
  • The information film on the "Coherence of Global Political Agendas" was presented at Global Platform Disaster Risk Reduction (www.gidrm.net/…).
  • The results of the evaluation of existing SDG interaction tools, the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement ("Tool Analysis") will be available from November 2019 via the IKI website.
