Sustainable Development of Coastal Protected Forests (Wetlands) in Bac Lieu Province

As of: August 2018

Objective and activities

To improve coastal protection, the project was planting new coastal forests and regenerating existing ones in Viet Nam’s Bac Lieu Province. This included establishing conservation zones for mangrove forests, which were then managed jointly by the local community and the provincial government. At the same time, the project was generating alternative sources of income for coastal communities, which do not damage the coastal forests. This made people less dependent on the coastal forests with the result that they can use them more sustainably. The project also trained local government employees and relevant institutions in the management of coastal areas.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • Activities to restore coastal forests have been supported, including the afforestation of 100 hectares of coastal strip incorporating biodiversity considerations; about five hectares were planted with rare endemic mangrove species
  • Biodiversity surveys and studies in a bird reserve have been carried out in conjunction with Can Tho University and the Forestry office at district level; a management plan for the bird reserve has been developed
  • Alternative sources of income, such as mussel or snail farming, have been trialled
  • Training and advisory services have strengthened the management skills of relevant institutions in Bac Lieu Province in connection with mangroves, biodiversity, aquaculture and land use planning
