Water and Wastewater Companies for Climate Mitigation (WaCCliM)

As of: November 2018

Objective and activities

The project is helping to reduce the carbon footprint of water and waste water utilities in Mexico, Peru, Thailand and Jordan. To this end, it is implementing technologies in pilot companies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as water loss reduction systems, energy-efficient pumps, biogas generation and fertiliser production from wastewater. At national level, the project advises the countries in developing financial mechanisms and political frameworks for replicating demonstration projects. Knowledge exchange between the pilot companies and national and regional associations as well as a web-based knowledge platform facilitate the further development and dissemination of technologies that reduce greenhouse gases. In this way, the project also helps to improve climate change mitigation strategies for water and waste water utilities and to disseminate them internationally.

State of implementation/results

  • Selection of water and wastewater companies based on developed criteria
  • Baseline studies on GHG mitigation potential, political and institutional frameworks
  • Studies to develop measures for GHG reduction based on the available technologies adapted to local conditions
  • Water and wastewater companies advised on identifying, financing and implementing model projects
  • Advisory services on monitoring systems and on country-specific financing mechanisms for implementing climate-friendly technologies
  • Development of international guidelines and factsheets
  • Establishment of an internet-based learning and information platform for the CO2 neutrality of water and wastewater companies
  • Implementation of the NDC in the partner countries supported, cross-cutting water and energy
  • Development of the 'Energy performance and Carbon Assessment and Monitoring' (ECAM) tool and its training material
  • Training of staff of water and wastewater companies in applying and operating climate-friendly technologies as well as in using ECAM in the partner countries and others ones
  • reduction of energy and GHG emissions through optimization of operation and process of pilot plants, partly while increasing population connected to sewer system in Peru and Mexico
  • development of NAMA for the water sector supported in Jordan
  • project presented on national and international events, meetings and conferences (e.g. Side Event at COP22, IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition 2016, World Water Week in Stockholm in August 2017 and 2018, WWF8 in Brazil 2018, IFAT in Munic in May 2018)
